desktops usuall have more RAM (memory), a bigger hard drive, (come with a ) bigger screen, a better graphics card and have the chance to be upgraded as time moves on.
Laptops usually have lower specs than their desktop counterparts, but with the advent of the Core Duo 2 processors and the popularity of laptops, the gap in processing power is getting smaller.
Laptops can be carried andywhere but cant be upgraded, so depending on what you want to use them have a life of around 2-5 years before they start to become slow and outdated.
Havng said that my 2.5 year old HP laptop (which im writing this on) is going strong with a 1.6 ghz centrino processor, and I surf, have an mp3 collection, use Reason music sequencing software and Photshop Elements for art based creativity, and its just fine.

depends on what you want. Laptops don't have as big of a hard drive, and are a little more pricey. They are versital. You can take them to a friends house to do some work, to work, school. They can get hot, since they don't have a lot of space to work with, the bottom does get very hot while your using the laptop.
Desktops have better memory, can run better since they don't have the heat problem, and are a little cheaper. A bad side is all the extra wires, the fact that you can't move it anyplace, you need the monitor.
So it depends on you. I do graphics. Most programs run fine on my laptop, and I can sit on the couch and watch tv while doing my work, but a nice desktop would be better for some of my applications. The fact that the desktop could have better power in memory and graphic cards would really help out if you play a lot of games or run powerful programs.

Desktops... It's more easy for you to upgrade it... Most of the laptops uses an on-board driver so it could be getting old very quickly unless you are a "mobile person", laptops is more useful for you. But if you are some home guys I think it's more nice if you buy a desktop computer

some pros and cons:
Laptops:
of course you can bring it anywhere you can have your computer, play a game, get to the internet, do all computer stuff anytime anywhere.
Problem is you are limited to the battery life, good if u brought the charger, but what if you forgot it.
Another is expandibility, expanding the hard drive capacity, memory is limited and very costly.
When one component gets busted the whole thing would be affcted.
Desktop:
you can only do computer stuff from where it is set-up, if you want to transfer it, you have to haul it.
You wont have to worry about batteries, unless if there is power failure and a desktop cant use batteries.
Expandibility is limitless, even if its an old P3, you can still make it fast installing 1G of memory compatible to your motherboard.
If you have a problem with sound, have your sound card checked, if you a have a problem with video, have your video card checked, meaning all components are independent from each other

Desktops are more powerful, cheaper, and easier to upgrade. But they stay in one place.
Laptops are more convenient. I use my laptop by the pool and at the coffee shop.
