I just heard that strict laws are imposed upon minors in the USA.
They aren't allowed to be left alone in their house without prior supervision of a guardian, etc
Is this true? How are single mothers/fathers living with their children treated(citizens and immigrants)?

It depends on what age of minor we are talking about here. Generally speaking, children under ten are not allowed to be at home alone without supervision. Children 11-12 and older often stay at home alone, depending on their maturity level, but there are also many after school programs for kids whose parents work.

Most areas have curfews for those under 16 that are only loosely enforced, and it is generally 10pm-midnight depending on the area. It's usually only enforced if problems are being created, and some areas don't have a curfew for minors.

Most businesses won't hire workers under 16, although legally younger teens can hold a job with limited hours. Family owned businesses can allow their children to work at any age.

There are so many single parent families, that there is effectively no difference in how they are treated.

Well, it all depends on what age child you are talking about. It's more about common sense. Of course you shouldn't leave a 4 or 5 year old at home by themselves. But a 12 or 13 year old by themselves for a couple of hours shouldn't be a big deal. For single parents that work, there are plenty of day care options for young children. (Daycare is expensive though) Each state and town has their own laws and rules as to what age a child can be left alone, you'd have to check with the city and state that you'd be visiting or moving to. But again, it's all a matter of judgment. You know your child better than anyone. Single parents are very common in the USA and aren't treated much different than two parent families. As far as laws regarding minors, there are many. Legal age to drive is 16 in most states (though it varies, and the licensing requirements vary as well) Legal age to purchase tobacco products 18 in most states, 19 in some. Legal age to purchase alcohol is 21. I would check with the US based embassy of your home country to find out all the details of what is different from your country and the US in regards to child laws.
