expensive isn't it! the Phone companies use it, so do Hospitals and the Military and Aircraft industries. YOu can purchase it, but It doesn't come in household size, it comes on large spools. got a friend at the phone company? maybe he can get you a short odd piece? Or just ask one the next time you see a service truck out an about, on how to obtain some for your own use.

They are also used in photoelectric sensors in industry instead of lenses , try companies called Banner,Sick,Keyence,Omron,datalogic,sunx.you may get some scraps from their workshops.

Without knowing to what purpose? I had a though about them used in lighting, before I thought communications.
If it is for decorative lighting you might go direct to the WWW and type in specific keywords, perhaps even going into import distributors?
