I loved being a professor and was really sad when my health led me to retire. It was totally fun being in school and spending every day of my life talking to energetic young people. Being around young people rubs off on you. When I retired everyone said, 'you're not old enough!' they were amazed to see that I was 10 years older than anyone thought.

the 'bad' side to being a professor is not really a bad side. It is that in order to get a job you must be the best student in the class. To become a professor you must literally be the best person in the world in your particular subject. You must finish your PhD and be so good at what you do that when the college has a job opening and 100 PhDs apply for the position, they will pick you. If you were a professor of German you would have to speak perfect German and know all about the history of Germany and have written books and articles about Germany. they are not going to hire you if there is some other PhD hanging around who speaks and writes better than you about that subject.

You won't make a fistfull of dollars. The average professor in the USA makes between $50 - $100,000 a year. To get the $100,000 end of the scale you have to be in some technical subject like engineering or pharmacy. Of course, people who are out in the world being engineers can make much more. So in order to be a professor you have to be willing to take less $$ than you would if you were doing the job that you are teaching about. Your students will probably go out into the world and make more than you the first few years they work.

To be a good prof you have to truly love to learn, truly love to pass on what you know, truly love to speak in front of other people, and be an honest and caring person who cares about his students.

Well the only bad that I can tell you off is the PAY. It is not enough. The UGLY is that senority rules meaning people that have been there longer get to pick the courses they want to teach and you get the left overs. I mean you the courses are still in your field but let's say your in math so you wanted to teach Calculus but instead your stuck teaching Discrete Math. The Good is that you learn as you go... there is so much that you learn when you teach also you see so many different type of people.

A professor is a teacher in college. but he also has to give lectures and publish papers. Theses or theories in mathematics or physics are what makes Einsteins, Newtons or Kepler's. or if you are Freudian or skinner then you must understand the psycho mind
