we have replaced the computer with a brand new one had the vin flashed etc., had electrical harness checked etc. car still just shuts off. have replaced transmission recently. rechecked by shop to verify that their work didn't cause it. the old computer wouldnt communicate at all.replaced it then it still would not work. mechanics decided to reinstall original transmission control module because we had also replaced it with a used one recently. now computer does communicate but mechanics said to replace the transmission control relay(i believe that is what it was called) replaced that still having problems. any other ideas out there? fyi -- the gas gauge started acting wacky prior to these problems and eventually stopped working. related?

You may have a bad harness. The 96 Sebring’s where known to have wiring harnesses that would go bad if moved around too much when they got older. If you have a good mechanic who knows electrical work really well, have him check all the connections and verify that they all have a clean path. I'm willing to bet a number of the wires in the harness have breaks in them and the harness needs to be repaired or replaced. If worse comes to worse you will need to take it to the Dealer and have them hunt it down. They have most likely seen this issue and know exactly where to look to resolve it.

are you having this tested professionally or are you just replacing parts? A simple way to get the scan codes out of a Chrysler computer, at least the older ones is to quickly turn the ignition on and off three times and then leave it on. The check engine light will start blinking. it will start by blinking once, a short pause then 2 blinks then a longer pause . That is code 12, it just means it isn't get a distributor pulse because it isn't running.
If there are any codes stored in the computer, it will blink them in order. It used 2 didget codes. Write down each number as it comes up and see if any are stored. It will end with 5 quick blinks a short pause then five more quick blinks for code 55 which is just the end of codes message. If you don't get all the codes the first time you can start from scratch and do it over again. Just turn the ignition off and do the three on and offs again and leave it on, the third time.

You also say that your gas gauge slowly quit working, the fuel pump wires are in the same harness going to the fuel tank check there.
If it starts and dies right away it could be as simple as a clogged fuel filter. When you turn the key on the pump will pump enough through the filter to get it started but not enough to keep it running. Have someone put their ear to the gas filler tube with the cap off and turn the ignition on, don't start the car just turn the ignition on. you should be able to hear the pump run for about 3 to 5 seconds.
