Many parts stores will check the alternator for free.
Charge the battery and take the car to one , some can check it on the car while others must have it off.
most can check it while off the car

The more the battery is run down the shorter the life of the battery

How urgent are you to go away tomorrow, can you wait till the afternoon?
If so then pop into Your nearest Kmart tyre and auto service center in the morning, they open at 8.30 am and close at 2.30 pm, they will check your battery and alternator on the spot and affect repairs where nessesary.
Does your dash light come on, The one like a battery, If so then it is the alternator, If not then i would say it is either a break in th cable from the alternator to the battery or a bad connection at the alternator or battery.

ok,when he puts the new battery in,test the volts the alternater is putting out with a volt meter.it should put out between 14.5 and 13.4 volts.if its any lower say around 12 and under the alternater is buggered,or the voltage regulater which in some cases are inbuilt.hope it helps

It could be anything from your description. The car is, after all, 18 years old!

do as simonj_smith said, but also make sure your battery cables are in good condition clean and firmly attached.
