As noted, the major league record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game is 20, shared by Clemens (twice), Wood, and Johnson (pitched first nine of an extra-inning game).

The extra-inning game record is 21 by Cheney.

There has been one, 27-strikeout, nine inning game in the minors, however. Ron Necciai did it in 1952 for a Pirates affiliate.

Nope, that's never happened before. The record for strikeouts in a 9-inning game is 20, achieved by Roger Clemens twice, Kerry Wood and Randy Johnson. Tom Cheney struck out 21 batters but it was in a 16-inning game.

Roger Clemens struck out 20 in a game in 1986, and again in 1996 with the Red Sox, and Kerry Wood struck out 20 in 1998 for the Cubs. No one else has struck out more in 9 innings in MLB history.

Tom Cheney of the Washington Senators struck on 21 (or is it 22?) in a 16-inning performance in 1962 I believe.

* Randy Johnson, Arizona Diamondbacks (NL), May 8, 2001, vs. Cincinnati. This game went 11 innings. Johnson recorded all 20 strikeouts in the first nine innings of work. MLB has recently recognized this as having tied the record.
* Kerry Wood, Chicago Cubs (NL), May 6, 1998, vs. Houston.
* Roger Clemens, Boston Red Sox (AL), Sept. 18, 1996, at Detroit.
* Roger Clemens, Boston Red Sox (AL), April 29, 1986, vs. Seattle.
