I usually take my ties to the dry cleaners but I worked out the other day that if I do that 3 times it's cost me more to clean them than I bought them for. How can I wash them at home?

If a tie has a lining, this tends to move during washing (it, to me, seems to be cut on a different bias from the tie itself!), so it needs to be basted the full length of the tie on both sides to keep the lining in place.
Hand wash, carefully, in warm soap flakes.

Its not a good idea to wash them at home as you could end up destroying them because of the chemicals and stuff. If you were going to wash a tie you should put it in a delicates bag and wash them in cold or warm water and use a slow spin cycle. Alternatively you could hand wash them.

You can not wash silk ties or any kind of material on ties, because of the stiffer that was put inside will be distorted. You only dry clean when you spilled drinks or food on your ties,it is not like shirt or pants that you have to dry clean all the time.

I would wash them carefully in warm water by hand using a mild soap such as a wool wash. After rinsing I wouldn't wring them but I would dry them flat on a dry towel out of the sun.

Do not wash silk ties. They will either shrink or permanently wrinkle plus silk ties are very delicate and the fine stitching will probably come apart. Dry cleaning is your only safe solution.

Depends how dirty it is but i handwash my hubby's in lukewarm water and a bit of washing powder. Our dry cleaners charge us £3 a tie and can become quite expensive so can understand where you coming from on that!

You may find this helps.... go to your local model shop (as in Model Aircraft etc) get a length of "Piano Wire" , its thin and springy, bend it into 2, like a "V" shape, push this up the tie before you press it, it will get it flat for you.

Personally I wouldn't risk it - I tried it once and ruined my husband's favourite tie!
