All they do is spit throughout the whole game, then they pick their noses when the cameras are on them, then as a coupe de grace they scratch their butt,do these players do the same things at home or in the restaurants they frequent

I don't know, but my stepson is 13 and on the Babe Ruth team, and he spit the other day while he was batting! They chew on sunflower seeds and spit them yes, but he didn't have any! They watch thier idols on t.v., spitting, grabbing thier crotch etc. He's a perfect gentleman in public. I saw him spit the other day, it was like I was in the twighlight zone! Growing up, I had a crush on Lance Parrish of The Detroit Tigers, he did none of this. I later met him at a bbq and never did it then. I've never seen Jeter do it either. I guess some just don't have camera class!

I am assuming you've never played ball before...
1st - players have no idea when the camera is on them so they don't know that they are being zoomed in on. The nose thing, ya its gross but, they're out there constantly bombarded by dust. It ends up in every orafice that isn't covered: nose, eyes, ears. Try playing for three hours in the dust and see if you aren't tempted to clean out the old nostrils.

2nd - polyester uniforms are not comfortable especially in the heat; when you're sweating in those things you're gonna itch everywhere - including your butt.

3rd - you didn't mention this someone else did but I'll address it anyway. Ball players aren't grabbing their crotches just for the fun of it, they're adjusting their cup. Cups are one of those necessary evils that everybody hates but nobody would ever play without. They're bulky, they never sit just right, and they shift everytime you move. Believe me when I say, playing with a mispositioned cup is almost as bad as playing without one.

These players aren't going out of their way to be gross (chewing tobacco doesn't help, though) it's just the nature of the game. Very few sports get as close and personal during a game as baseball; other sports move too fast and there's too much going on to be able to focus in on one player or one aspect of the game. The pace of a baseball game affords this. Sometimes you're gonna see things you don't want to but its not intentional. And if you really want to see gross - watch a sweaty offensive line bend over and get into a three point stance from the backside after they've been playing for 3 quarters. Sweaty 310 pound butts are pretty gross, too.

I think baseballl players carry a stronger following because people in every generation can get into baseball. You got tots to 90+ year olds in the stands every day.Its a slow paced sport relaxing and easier for alot of fans to follow then more complex things like football.I am sure all you guys have had that one girlfriend who's like "what does a first down mean" or "does the two minute warning mean something bad will happen in 2 minutes" and you just roll your eyes wondering is she serious lol.But those kind of people can follow baseball, its very basic,if a team is hitting they are doing good if they are striking out they are doing bad, doesn't take a rocket scientist.
