I use tampons sometimes when I sleep. If ur period is really heavy then it's okay to use it at night. Also put a panty liner on or a pad just in case so nothing will stain, if it is heavy. Don't worry!!! :-)

The risk with using tampons longer than 8 hours is that you may develop a condition called Toxic Shock Syndrome. That little paper in the tampons? Yeah that is it. It is not very common anymore because of precautions taken by users and manufacturers. If you use a new tampon that is not greater than necessary for your flow while you sleep then you should be ok. If your pads are not sufficient while you sleep then buy different pads. Wings or they actually make pads that are like underware. A pad while you sleep is not a bad idea anyway since you may leak with a tampon anyway. You should not use a tampon longer than you have to and always watch out for signs and symptoms (listed on the paper in the tampon box). If you continue to have questions don't hesitate to call your doctor. That is what they are there for.

Well, if you keep a tampon in for too long, there is a possibility that you can get TSS, or Toxic Shock Syndrome, which is caused by a bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus (or sometimes streptococcus) being introduced to exposed blood vessels in your uterus during menstration. So using a single tampon for an entire night is not recommended. You can still use them, but you may need to get up and change during the night. As for pads, just try using different brands and kinds until you find one that works for you. Some brands offer an 'overnight' kind of pad that is usually longer and shaped a little different. Good luck to you.

Personally, I use a tampon when I'm sleeping, but you're technically not supposed to leave a tampon in for more than 8 hours at a time (and I usually sleep for more than 8 hours). If you're concerned about getting TSS during the night from using tampons, there are pads that are specifically for nighttime wear and I've heard they work well, you could try them.
EDIT: Wearing tampons more than 8 hours at a time, or wearing a tampon with an absorbency higher than you need (i.e. using a super tampon when you only need a light tampon), increases your risk of developing TSS, or toxic shock syndrome. This is when bacteria builds up, in this case, around the tampon and begins to affect the body with the overload of bacteria; TSS can lead to death if not treated right away. However, if you use tampons correctly, your chances of getting TSS is very rare. In fact, TSS is a rather rare condition and only about half of those cases in the U.S. each year are in cases involving tampons. If you want more information, there should be a leaflet about it in any tampon box you buy.

Hi Pizmo - I am 47 and have been using tampons throughout the night since I was a teen with no ill effects. I always shower before bed and make sure my hand is very clean prior to using tampons at any time to reduce the chance of introducting infection. Sometimes in the night I wake up and if I do I change, but if I dont, I just do it as soon as I wake.

I have been using tampons usually.... And Toxic Shock Syndrom is only at high risk if youre using a tampon that is higher then your actual flow.... If you're quite heavy, use Super at night.. .And put it in RIGHT before you goto bed,and wear a panty liner.....
Or get the Nighttime pads,, theyre extra long for the leaking... Although I find it uncomfortable to wear pads, feels like diapers... YUK.. and stinky..

I've used tampons when I have slept for years. Never had any problems. Many women do. If your flow is really heavy use a tampon and a pad. Just change it first thing in the morning.

Why can't you use them at night? Unless your period is heavy, you should be fine. If you need pads, get the overnight pads with wings, the long ones. And make sure they're bulky ... the thin ones aren't good for overnight use. There's a reason why, but I don't want to be graphic.

there are some pretty good night time pads available and if you don't mind you can use those Depends underwear for urinary incontinence. i sometimes use them when i am bleeding heavily. good luck! the people that are saying that is ok to use tampons at night are wrong . and it doesn't matter which strength they are because they are not supposed to be left in that long . tss can result in numerous mthings the worst being death! you don't want to take that risk!
