Hitler, under the notion that treason was afoot, purged the ranks of the SA (including their leader, Roehm who was trying to make the SA equal to the Army which alarmed the army and Hitler needed the Army's support) and other undesirables. Von Papen, who had at one time been Chancellor and was a cabinet member, was placed under house arrest. Von Schliecher, also a former chancellor, but not part of the Nazi government was murdered along with his wife. Scores of other minor leaders were either killed or imprisoned as well. It was designed to secure Hitler's hold on power and eliminate real or imagined competiton. All of this under the pretence that there was a treason plot. This pretence got President Hindenburg to approve of Hitler's actions.

The night of the long knives occured after the death of President von Hindenburg of Ger,any. This would be the night that Hitler would eliminate enemies and friends who theatened his opportunity for absolute rule in Germany in the summer of 1934. He killed Ernst Roehm, a known homosexual and probably at one time second in command to Hitler in some circles as leader of the SA. Rumors have it that this might have been a cover-up for past sexual behavior of Hitler in the past. It was the night that the SS under Himmler would take over from the SA completely to be Hitler 's right arm so to speak. Hitler believed that the SA were out of control and could no longer be managed annd he felt a problem if he were to be the absolute leader of Germany.

between the enormous issues it did propose, became the German extreme Command coming greater onto Hitlers part, till now this they appeared upon the SA as a protection tension tension of thugs, rebels and achieveable to the employer yet could desire to do no longer something on the topic of the. Hitler enlisted tips from the army promising them that most of the SA may be transfered to the army administration aside from a number of the worst who may be destroyed. What the did no longer understand on the time became that it became no longer purely the SA that became purged, yet a number of persons who might, the place and could desire to intrude with the events objectives and Hitlers objectives the place liquadated on a similar time. After this the installation of the Totaliarian state became virtually finished as a results of fact the army then surrendered to the Oath of Loyalty, the SS became the main considerable protection tension for the country, The Gestapo became set up and the 1930's became a plenty darker place.
