Pauline you are right as always
it gets to me too
when the words transvestite, transsexual, transgender, shemale, ladyboy, drag-king, drag-queen, even tom-boys, x-dresser, are all mix up
i do not know where the USA went wrong in defining these terms
but it is really insulting to some of us to be considered another term
so i ask if you do not know learn
X-dresser / Cross-dresser
is a person that dressers up as the opposite sex they normally only cross-dress for them selfs or partner are normally heterosexual normally it is for a sexual feeling or a comfort feeling normally this person will never leave the safety of there bed room or house
Transvestite
is a person that x-dresses for fun, work, or even war, these people will often x-dress for only a period of time, most do not get operations but those that do do not have a sex change (srs), and live as either gender
Drag-queens or Drag-kings
is a proformer that works in a stage show etc. most of these people are transvestites or transsexual and it is a good souse of money and employment, sometimes not worth it from agents etc. but it is a lot of fun to do
Shemale or Ladyboy
this really is a m2f term
this it a term for the porn industry normally these people are male at birth have had operations to appear as a female such as breast augmentation (implants), facial feminisation, this often does not involve hormones as the person needs to have the function of male genitalia that hormones can effect
Transsexual
it means a person that is either had operation or will get and operation, S.R.S. -(Sex reassignment surgery) or more commonly known as sex change surgery, defined by the words 'pre' meaning before and 'post' meaning after, this person often will take hormones and have to undergo a RLT (real life test) to live as th chosen gender, often as a child these people feel the need to by there chosen gender and it is a feeling that will not go away
Note: the Transsexual person can be any one of the above but they have operation as the long term a goal
the term Transgender
is the umbrella all of the above fall under from a cross dresser to a transsexual and in between it is the legal term used for discrimination law suits and the fight for equal rights
transgender is what the T stands for in the GLBTI
IT IS NOT A SEXUALITY IT IS A CONFLICT OF GENDER

You're absolutely right.
'transgendered' is a term coined in the 1960s by Charles (aka 'Virginia') Prince, the married, heterosexual transvestite publisher of 'Transvestia' a transvestite fetish magazine. He invented the term as a more socially acceptable mask for transvestism. It has since been adopted by the PC components of society as an umbrella term for anyone who appears different from the perceived gender norm (to demonstrate how ludicrous that is; it is technically correct to describe all homosexual people as transgendered, since their sexual orientation differs from 'perceived norms'. Although i wouldn't recommend it...)
'Transgender' is a lifestyle choice; it does not mean the same as 'transsexualism (Benjamin's syndrome; see link below), which is a congenital physiological condition.
Prince himself would be horrified by the inclusion of transsexualism under the term 'transgender'; he considered transsexual people to be insane and refused to be associated with us in any way.
Edit; incidentally, it's not just people from the USA who use the term incorrectly; it's fast becoming mainstream in the UK too (but we're working on it...:))

Sensual, you know I love you so don't take this wrong. Unfortunately it is due to convenience and ignorance that people do it. Unfortunately look it up in a dictionary and it states something along the lines of :
Trans gender is the state of ones "gender identity" (self-identification as male, female, both or neither) not matching ones "assigned gender" (identification by others as male or female based on physical/genetic sex). Trans gender does not imply any specific form of sexual orientation — trans gender people may identify as queer, heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, pan sexual or asexual.
Do you see what I mean? It is a term that embraces whole load of people and unfortunately that suits some people to be that way in their attitudes. I remember my Mum saying to me once 'It wasn't the thought of you sleeping with another man that bothered me about you being gay, It was you getting dressed up as a woman and acting all effeminate.!' People need educating and these catch all expressions and words are part of people trying to come to terms with all the varieties of sexuality and people there are out here!

I don't understand the criticism.
What term is preferred for people who dress like the opposite gender?
What is the term for people who have the operations?
I have a friend who has only had part of the surgeries. What is the term for him?
It's semantics. Not a slight.

Yes, there are tons of other mistakes and poor grammar etc. that have crept into some cultures. It's not for those of us on the outside to decide how we term other people, but for those that we're relating to. My grammar and other language usage, is often very poor, though I strive to improve it.
Thanks Sensual! I hope others listen to, as well as follow, your request.
Good luck! Rob
