Actually, that was the SA.

The SS initially a palace guard. Answer B does cover this, but they were also a political/military statement. Hitler did not trust generals or the regular german army and wanted an alternative that a - reflected the racial purity etc. b - loyal and controlable.

The SS enjoyed a great deal of publicity during their role in the Polish, Chzec and French campaigns. They were, primarily used as shock troops. First in etc. and suffered a high casualty rate because of it. They viewed the British paras as equals, so you can see how they viewed themselves.

However, later on in the war, the SS divisions were expanded to include French, Dutch, English and even Turkish divisions (The Russian Division "Russish" being disbanded as being too brutal, at the request of the other SS divisions).

The SS, despite their origins, can be considered as an elite force.

Some weird previous answers...

Their original mandate was to protect Hitler, sort of like his private, elite guard, and to scare the hell out of his opponents. Later, they went on to hold some of the most trusted positions in his government because they were seen as being especially dedicated to the Nazi party and very reliable.
