Leon Trotsky organised and directed the Red Army, but it was quite fragmented and local leaders had a lot of power. Stalin fought with the southern Red army and most of his cronies were comrades of his from those days. The White Army had many leaders because it was several very distinct forces all of whom attacked the communists.
