it depends on smith. gore had a pretty solid year. I don't think it was a fluke so that leaves the pressure on alex. if he can develope and does well this year, the niners have an up and coming team and the future looks bright. if he can't, well the next few years will look like the last few years.

I think Alex Smith and Frank Gore can take this team very far, just not this year. They are a very young team transitioning to a new defense. That is very difficult, especially for a bunch of young players, which their defense is filled with. They also lost offensive guru Norv Turner so they will have to change their offense at least slightly. That has to suck for Smith after having a pretty good year last year. I think this division belongs to the Seahawks for at least one more year but in a few more years as the Hawks get older and the Niners gain some much needed experience, they can be scary.

Its not how far Smith and Gore can take them its how far their crappy defense will let them go. You can give up 41, 42, 41 to the cheifs, bears, and chargers and hope to win games. the defense was bad pretty much all year last year. Getting a desent corner in Clements will be nice but Spenser played OK last year and still didn't get it down. The problem they have is in the trenches and their line gets pushed around. If they can keep getting tough under Mike Nolan and improve they will be better than last year but don't expect them to turn the corner this year.

PS Lelie sucks and wont do crap next year. Jackson will be ok but Alex Smith is the bottom of the middle of the pack in QBs in the NFL as of right now.

To be honest. I think with the talent they got through free agency and the draft, I think the niners are at least going to take the division. Personally, i hope they take the superbowl, cause i'm a niners fan. But, look at the talent they picked up. And look at how Gore started producing so well. I think the running game is going to be great and it's going to open up the passing game. Smith has came a long ways from his rookie year. I think they are going to be a force to be reckoned with.

this year? only as far as their new offensive cooridinator can get them. i loved them last year. but i dont want to jump back on the "niners to the superbowl" bandwagon just because one season of major improvement. norv is gone, alex and gore are even more figured out by the rest of the league. they will do fine this season, they wont flop, they wont exceed expectations to much. they might be lucky to make the playoffs because of the division. but they will come up short in high profile games because of inexperience in key positions on field and on the sidelines(OffCoord) im rooting for them though. they become a lock to win 10 games a year in 2 years and start a long and hopefully satisfying playoff streak for years to follow..

The division is still down. The draft you had, the running game, and the defense...you could and probably should win the division, and with that get a home game in the playoffs. Don't see them getting past the division round.

If the defense steps up this year (which with the additions looks very strong) I would say we can make it to the NFC championship possibly SB but I believe NFC championship for sure.

Second round of playoffs...if they're lucky they'll go even farther...Most ppl think SF are going nowhere but this is the NFC....they have a chance, slim, but still a chance to make it to the NFC championships....=p...
