What took the thousands of lives in the Chinese and Russian revolutions for communism? Why?

Let me restate, why did the comm. revolutions result in the numerous amounts of deaths?

Because of warfare between the communist and non-communist factions, and communist purges of the losers once the war was over.

Bullets, bayonets, swords, starvation took the lives
They thought they were getting a better life than under the previous rulers, but the new rulers were just as harsh as the old ones, if not more so.
