Try CPUZ:
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
Download and install. Open Memory and SPD tabs. It is all there.

That is a hard question to answer if you don't know exactly what you are doing as sometimes there are other limitations besides the type of RAM. Especially with an older computer. I would suggest taking it to a professional. Otherwise, its a bit of a shot in the dark without the proper knowledge, which this is hardly the place to convey. However, you might try a site with a tool for finding the type and size of RAM you can use like http://www.crucial.com/ who will also tell you if the configuration has been tested. For example, although HP suggests that my laptop only supports a max of 1GB of RAM, crucial reassured me that they have successfully tested 2GB of RAM in my system. I bought it from them and it works perfectly regardless of HP's claims.

Crucial.com has a memory configurator that you download to your computer, as another poster has already said. Perfectly harmless, no spyware, no junk. It'll tell you what kind of memory you have, how much, and how much you can upgrade to. CPU-Z tells you everything in your computer without opening it, go to CPUID.com to download. SDRAM memory has 168 pins, DDR has 184 pins, DDR2 has 240 pins, interchanging these is not physically possible!
