It was, it is, and it will be in future also. Even at B.C. it was a major center for all trades for India, connecting to other Cities in India. After India was, exposed to the World, it also grew as a major location for export of spices. It continued when the India was invaded by Muslim Rulers, and later in British Raj, it had kept its importance. To be precise it was a Capital for them to control whole of South India. Even now any body can have a look at the evidence. Only after hearing the popularity of this City, St. Thomas came down the to Chennai.
Cholas, and other prominent empires were all, made this City more attractive, and have their own contribution, which will remain immortal, for ever.

i'd like to reply to the previous post.. chennai was never a big trade center in B.Cs it was the british who realised the geographic importance of chennai and built a port there.. it was a fishing village till then .. click this link for more details
