In California the website is:

www.cslb.ca.gov
Click on consumer. You can check by business name or license number.
In any other state try the State's Home Page and look for a link.

Not sure what you are planing on doing but unless your state requires you to use a state license contractor I would first go by word of mouth to find the best at what you are wanting to do. I have run across many contractors in different fields that are bonded not licensed that are better than a book smart/ on hands dumb contractor.
By all means there are very good licensed contractors out there but rule of thumb is word of mouth on who does good reliable work and who doesn't is the best.
The thing is that there are trades out there that have you give them money ( money is the key word )for you to set in and take a class and they give you a license. You can sit in that same class and take the same test , if they even give one at the end and now you are a license contractor of that field.

Go to the County Court House: Everything should be there in black and white. I had to go there and pay for, and register my name and, get a number for mine many years ago.
