A girl in one of my moms groups just asked how much she should tip the painters. She said that they are done for the day and she wants to know how much she should tip them. I say if you're paying a company hundreds of dollars to have them paint the outside of your house you shouldn't have to tip them. I mean do we tip everybody . . . the company that put up my backyard fence? The guys that put on the new roof? The guys that come once a week from the landscaping company to cut my grass?

Who do you tip, and where should we draw the line??

I agree with offering them a beverage. I've even made lunch for some of the guys, but a tip??? Not for something I'm paying that kind of money for . . .

no tips for work that costs a bundle tips are for low paid workers who need to provide a certain level of service like a waiter so you expect good service and tip accordingly. it encourages people who count on tips to do their best. a painter you expect the best for the money you agree on up front. you could bring them lemonade while they work but no tips for them.

I tipped the guy that painted my house. I knew he wasn't trying to overcharge me and he did a really good job and I felt like he deserved a kudos. I have a medium size two story home and gave the guy an extra 100 bucks.

No monetary tip. You're paying for the service already, but a nice cool beverage on a hot day could be just much a token of your gratitude for the actual workers who did the toiling and sweating.

I have never heard of tipping painters. All of the painters that I have dealt with didn't work for a company, they worked for themselves. So they were getting all the profit; no need to tip. Unless they painted a mural of AC/DC on my house, I wouldn't tip them.

I hate those damned tip jars on all the counters nowadays. A tip was always intended for doing an exceptional job. Not for handing you a cup of coffee that you just paid 5 bucks for.

Painters are not usually tipped but they should be offered water and stuff.

No, no tipping for that. I am sure they are making good $.
Maybe offer a cold (non-alcoholic) beverage.
