I wouldn't spend that much, she must have really loved that cat.

My favorite cat came home limping from an entanglement with the fan belt in a neighbor's car. This was in the early spring. I grabbed a shovel to whack her and bury her, but I could not break through the sod (the ground was still frozen). While I was trying to dig her grave, the cat limped out to me.
So I stuck it in a small room in my house. I just figured I was going to have a three legged cat. I would have cut the leg off if it got infected, but other than that she was on her own. I have no idea how she managed, but she set her own leg, and healed up just fine. Not even a limp. The only thing was she had a slight crook in her tail, a sign she had once gotten injured.
I haven't seen that cat around in the last week--she probably got caught by the local coyotes.
Aside from cat food, which she sumplemented with an occasional mouse or small delicate (rare) songbird, I would be damned if I spent $100 on that animal for anything. I had her fixed.
$35,000? That is just insane. If I had to cough up $35,000 to give one of my kids a new heart, I guess I would commit to that. But for a cat? A shovel. It don't cost nowhere near $35,000. Damn!

$35,000 over 5 years = $7,000/year.
Even if you love your cat to death and you're as rich as Bill Gates...(and I know your family member is not...) what can you possibly buy that would cost that much???
I have a cat, I love my cat (because really, I don't like mice in my cupboard...). I just pay a few hundreds/year for the check up at the vet and the flea control stuff...
Even if you buy expensive toys for your cat...$7,000/year...no way...unless your family member has a gambling problem and is trying to blame the cat...better get another cat to blame then...

That's not a cat, that's a sponge!!! I hope u have the heart to have the cat stuffed for her. That's gotta be one special kitty litter box. Maybe u can have the litter box stuffed for her too. Steer her towards a pet rock the next time round. I'll bury the cat for $7,000.00......parking included. In all seriousness she must have loved the cat....a little sad I guess. Hope she is ok. How much, is too much, when u love something or somebody?

If she wanted to break her cat, that's ok. it quite is slightly a lot yet it replaced into her selection. that's no longer as a lot relating to the money yet of the quantity and high quality of the failings she paid for her cat. A cat tree expenses 5 grand yet some people want it. Then they won't get a cat domicile or container. So it relies upon on those issues. desire I helped :)

That seems extravagant and I am a cat lover...
I am sure I could not afford that amount of money...
I spend money on my cat for food and treats and toys, but I am disabled and out of work and I never made that kind of money when I was working...
Now if the cat needed surgery or expensive medication,
(I did the math and that's about $7,000 dollars per year)
but it does seem like a lot more than necessary...
That is also $583. per month...
WOW!!!

Yes, it's excessive, unless the cat's health was at stake at the time. Looks like the surgeries didn't work in any case. Poor Sylvester.

Major bad judgment. I understand loving ones pet, I have done things and spent money on treatments that many would not, but I did only what I could afford. Besides, why make animal suffer through sickness or treatments.
Sorry she is in this mess, but she will survive it. We all make bad decisions and most of them are survivable.

Well, that's life. And death. $35,000 would feed a family of 10 in Bangladesh for the rest of their lives and perhaps their children's lives. I for one feel a cat is more connected to the universe and therefore is more worthy of existence in the overall scheme of things, but that's just personal taste and it means nothing.

no, more likely 20,000 is the fair amount. all it needs is love, toys, shelter, and food. even if you buy expensive stuff that lasts 5 years, it will only be worth 20,000. a decent bag of food should be worth about $100-300 for 1-3 months of feeding.

It's really not for anyone but your family member to say if it's too much. She is certainly entitled to spend her money anyway she wants to, just as you are entitled to tell her no if she asks you to help her out financially.
