I wish more money was provided for research on the topic of stuttering. I have tried Speech Easy and about five years of therapy but I just continue to stutter, and I had faith in the Speech Easy also.

Devices like the Speech Easy work for some stutterers but not all, plus it is not a cure as for those that it helps, the stutter comes back as soon as they take the device out of their ear.

You do not "choose" to have a speech disfluency as one of the other said. It is true that the "I don't care what they think" does help as the first person said because stutterers don't seem to stutter as much or at all when they are comfortable with the people they are with or in the situation they are in. The more you try not to stutter, the more you will - or at least that is what my uncles and cousins who stutter have told me. My son has several friends who stutter, and all of them have commented that they don't stutter at our house because nobody cares if we do stutter; stuttering is "normal" here. One parent told us that their son said he felt more comfortable in our house than his own house because he knew his parents wanted to badly for him to stop stuttering.

My uncles and cousins all were helped by The Stuttering Foundation's book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer." They worked through the book studying and practicing each step and kept going over and over until they had perfected everything and were all able to overcome the stuttering except in times of great stress. One uncle also went to a speech therapist who specialized in treating stuttering.

None of them mentioned being taught any "tricks." I think those therapists who have been trained and have more experience with stutterers have better ways of helping than using "tricks" to avoid stuttering.

There is a new drug that is being tested now that wasn't available when my uncles and cousins were younger. Check the Stuttering Foundation's web site at www.stutteringhelp.org for information on Pagaclone (I think I spelled it right).

my parents tried like 15 different things, and it did not work.

It only went away when I learned to relax and do not worry about what people think of me.

Just keep telling yourself that you're cool, and you're gonna say a thing that everybody will like, and if they don't - no biggie.

That NLP poster below me is a New Age poophead. You cannot get rid of stuttering by focusing attention on it. You gotta forget that you stutter - think about what you're gonna say, the ideas you try to get across.

And some tricks they tried on me:
- Whisper (or just lip) the phrase before speaking out loud
- Sing, I mean talk like you're singing
- Do a fake accent or talk like some actor you like
- Find alternative ways of pronouncing sounds that give you trouble.

I've trained in Neuro Linguistics Programming and i have the belief that people either consciously or subconsciously choose to do things.......

Now going on that way of thinking, if say hyopthetically, you had the same belief, What would you say would be the reason that you've chosen to have a speaking challenge?.....

You see we humans do everything for a reason and there's always secondary gain to anything we do even if it seems to be an issue....

So why is it that you don't want to let go of your stuttering?....You gain something from having it, What is it that you're gaining that you fear will be lost if this issue goes away?

When you work that out and find a another more positive way of getting the same benefit, you will be able to let go of this issue.

Good luck mate, I hope they find something for you and others who have the same problem. One of my friends stutters so badly when he is around new people he has taken to not talking at all. When he is around just other mates he doesnt have the problem as severely - he says it is because we are his friends and dont judge him no matter what. Fingers crossed for you buddy.
