My husband spent a year in Iraq and we saved up about $8,000 for him to go to collage. The WIC program says that it is based on monthly income, which we quilify for, but it says to supply them with savings account withdrawls and accessable money, such as checking and savings accounts. However, they do not list an "asset limit". Before I go apply for WIC, does anyone know if they will deny me benefits because I have a decent savings account? The advice I am looking for is not, "Call them and ask" I know to do that. I'm wondering if anyone has worked for WIC or has been in the same situation as me.

I've been on WIC before. They ask for your income to qualify you. Sad to say, it's way easier to get WIC if you get Welfare and/or Food Stamps. That's just how the system works.

Your savings account should be accessible to your husband only since that's been set aside for his college expenses. I didn't say this to make you mad. I said it to help you qualify for WIC. Make sure to take receipts in that show college only purchases such as books, tuition, parking passes, etc. WIC will ask if you have access to this account & how often you access it. The fact that it's college only is an awesome answer for them. The less YOU touch it, the better. That doesn't mean your husband can't pull out $20 for you. It just means that WIC will want to see what that money's being spent on.

The more disposable or readily available cash you have, the less likely they'll approve you for their vouchers. They won't go checking your savings after you get on the vouchers, unless they've changed things & you have to requalify once a year like with Welfare & Food Stamps. It's been 6 years since I was on it so things may have changed.

Have all receipts ready, a copy of the savings statement & any other documents they ask for. Safely tuck them into a paper folder to take with you (you know the ones with POTC, Spiderman, unicorns, etc on them). Also take 2 pens, in case one runs out of ink or stops working. 2 brand new or just barely used ones are fine. Black ink is best as most of the things you'll sign on your appointment date requires black ink.

On the date of your appointment, arrive 20 minutes early, allowing about 5 to find a parking spot. Some WIC offices are small, some medium & some large. It all depends on where the county you live in was able to get a space for rent. The smaller offices usually have small parking & that's the 5 minute allotment you'll need. Early morning or just after lunch appointments are usually less crowded, so ask for one or take one if offered. I always preferred the appointments within their first opening hour. Least busy & less people. Sometimes the appointments right after their lunch were great too, less people.

Once you're approved for the vouchers, they'll ask you to pick a store close to you to shop at. The vouchers will be for that store ONLY. Almost all major grocery stores take the vouchers. If you pick one that doesn't, they'll tell you & suggest another store or you can.

The vouchers cover milk, cheese, eggs, peanut butter, dry beans, cereal & juice. Some counties have combo vouchers, more than one item on the voucher. After the baby's born, they'll cover formula, baby cereal, tuna, carrots. These items may vary by county & state.
