On 9/1/1939 Hitler invaded Poland, leading to the UK and France to declare war on Germany, and Germany to reciprocate.
For the next 6 months or so- a "Sitz kreig" took place where German and French forces faced each other but no all-out hostilities took place.
When Hitler had the logistics in place the following year- He struck France specifically to knock them out of the war as fast as possible- as France had the largest land army in europe and a prolonged war would favor them.

France, along with England, declared war on Germany following the invasion of Poland in 1939; so there was that. However, even if France had not declared war on Germany France would have been invaded for many reasons: plunder, and believe me the Nazis took everything they could from food and wine and farm animals and produce, to shoes and clothes, art treasures, gold bullion, you name it, they took it; next, for political reasons, Hitler hated France for the defeat Germany suffered in WWI, second of course, lebensraum, elbow room, he wanted their territory for good Nazis, and lastly conquest, having France made it easier to attack England, across the Channel, and he hoped to defeat both of them before he turned his sights on Russia, the richest conquest of all. But we all know how it all ended.

A world war was afoot and his traditional enemies had lined up against him along the Maginot Line and Low Countries. The ignominous defeat and Treaty of Versailles still left a bitter taste in his mouth.
