The sun is the huge fire ball...

without copying, what 'injanier' said.
That is the technical classification of the Sun.

It is a main sequence star. That, along with what injanier said, means that it is an ordinary, run of the mill, middle-aged, small star. (if you live in the US or Europe - think 45 year old hetero white man, 170 lbs)

There are plenty of stars bigger, and plenty smaller. Plenty younger, and plenty bigger. The only two things that make the sun unique is - first - it is a single star, most in the galaxy are double stars or more. Second - it has life - we havent found that anywhere else yet. This means that we are looking at similiar stars for life as opposed to non-mainstrean stars.

The sun is a population I G2V star. Population I (Roman numeral I) means it is of more recent formation. The older stars in our galaxy are known as population II, and there is a hypothetical population III that would have been the first generation of Milky Way stars. G2 refers to its spectral class, which relates directly to both temperature and color. V (that's another Roman numeral) indicates it's a "dwarf" or "main sequence" star - that is, one that is fusing hydrogen in its core.

solar, like maximum stars, is a important sequence celebrity. this means that it generates its power by using nuclear fusion of hydrogen nuclei into helium and is in a state of hydrostatic stability, neither contracting nor increasing over the years.
