I assume you mean the Revolution. Most people came way across the ocean to get away from oppressive monarchies in Europe. Great Britain took control of the area known as the thirteen colonies. Americans had a number of problems with British rule.

They forced American settlers to fight in a war against the French. They forced Americans to quarter soldiers for long periods of time with no compensation. They highly taxed a number of goods coming from Europe and placed British nationals in charge of local governments. They also did not allow any representation in Britain and strictly applied British law to the colonists. These are just a few of the problems the American people had with Britain. There are lots of good books about this time period and it is quite interesting.

I don't think they actually declared war until 1812...they didn't need to declare anything when they declared independence...the Declaration of Independence was enough...that and having British in your back yard shooting at you and burning everything
