i have to take my cavy to petsmart tomorrow.. i'm still within my 14 day window from his adoption.. he got a URI and i need him to be on antibiotics. i wasn't aware of them getting sick after pet store adoptions, so i wasn't financially prepared. thankfully, they are obligated to treat him since it is within that 14 day window... but someone today told me that some vets will kill the animal because it is more expensive to treat him than it is to replace him.... please tell me this isn't true! i'm so scared! i don't have much of a choice though! i have to work 13 hours tomorrow, and i can't take him. i have to let petsmart take care of him....

I work at Petsmart, and at my store, we never put animals down unless they are in extreme pain, with absolutely no chance of recovery. All of our other sick animals are treated until they are well, and if a pet parent wants to wait for the full length of the treatment, they can generally get their animal back after it gets better. Ask the store if you can do this, and leave a name and number so they can call you when he gets better.
Best of luck!

I have never heard of a pet store doing that with an animal that someone still wants.... If you were taking him back and saying you didn't want him, then it might be a different story.
It's an URI those are relatively inexpensive to treat most times just antibiotics.
URI are common in cats and even more common when they have been kept in an area with other cats. The Vet will be used to treating it and I wouldn't worry about leaving your cat there while you work.

I currently work for the SPCA and URI's are very common and very treatable. Nobody should euthanize your pet WITHOUT your consent. I would recommend looking into taking your little one to your local SPCA, we are low cost and we can save you tons of money. I hope this helps some and good luck! :) Also, yes most petsmarts do offer a veterinary hospital called Banfield. I use to work for them and they are great, BUT I can gaurantee you will be walking out of there spending a minimum of $150 that could easily cost you $20 at your local SPCA.

Most PetSmarts have a Banfield now. I never heard of them killing an animal. They may not go all out on medical benefits if you returned the animal, and no longer claim ownership, though.
My local PetSmart is very wonderful with their animals. I got a rat from them, that was a return, and wasn't ''sellable'', so they asked me if I was interested.

This isn't true....No Vet that I know of or ever heard of puts animals down for that.. Usually the vet tells the owner, who wants to put them to sleep instead of paying for them to recover, to call a rescue for that breed. No one can put your animal to sleep without your consent either..And Pet smart does a lot for charities and rescues, and my experience with their employees is that they all love animals even the ones that don't own them..

Ask them when you can pick up your dog after they get him treated by the Vet. I doubt if they would kill a dog as they have already made a nice profit when you bought your dog. Usually these stores have an arraignment with a vet or vets that don't cost them as much as an owner.
