Your laptop will not build up a static charge.

However, what can happen is that you build up a static charge, then when you plug your laptop into the AC adapter or onto a dock you discharge the static through the laptop.

The laptop should be designed to cope with this, but sometimes if you are hot docking it can reset the machine.

The solutions are to not hot dock (you should not be carrying your laptop around when it is running anyway), and to touch the bare metal of the AC adapter plug or the dock before connecting your laptop.
