use the FOIL technique
(6x+2)(8x-9)
First (6x)(8x) = 48x^2
Outer (6x)(-9)= -54x
Inner (2)(8x) = 16x
Last (2)(-9) = -18
Since we can still simplify -54x and 16x then -54x + 16x = -38x
So the final answer is 48x^2-38x-18

Ok your teacher or who ever combined like terms they multiplied 6x times 8x which equals 48x I don't know how they got the 2 and 38x but the -18 came from multiplying 2 and 9= 18. I not good at math so the people who responded before me are probably right.

They used FOIL, a multiplication technique. It stands for first, outer, inner, last. Simply do each of those in order. I'll walk you through.
1st multiply the first terms: 6x and 8x, making 48x^2
Next multiply the two inner terms(of the four) 2 and 8x, making 16x.
3rd, mutliply the 2 outer terms: 6x and -9, making -54x
Now, the last terms-2 and -9, making negative 18.
Now add all those together: 48x^2+16x-36x-18
Which then becomes 48x^2-38x-18

An easy way is to multiply everything in the second bracket by everything in the first bracket and then gather terms:-
= 48x² - 54x + 16x - 18
= 48x² - 38x - 18

USING THE F.O.I.L. METHOD MULTIPLY THE FIRST NUMBER, THEN THE OUTTER NUMBERS, THEN THE INNER NUMBERS, AND OF COURSE THE LAST NUMBERS, THEN SIMPLYFY.
EX: F= 6X TIMES8X = 48X^2

I= 2 TIMES 8X= 16 X

YOU CAN THEN SIMPLYFY -54X+16X=38X

and u get
42x^2-54x and 16x-18
add them
42x^2-54x+16x-18
=42x^2-38x-18

48x-54x+16x-18
then you collect like terms
