From someone who lived in the 60s and can give a first hand account, I'll do my best:
1) "Love Beads"...the equivelant of the mardi-gras beads today. Cheap beads that you would wear but give to someone you met who you "loved". And remember, "hippies" loved everyone...it was all about peace and love and living in harmony. Hippies were children of the earth, one with nature and the higher spirit.
2) A hippie went naked alot, but if youre not living in a commune, thats not going to work for you. So a peasant blouse, bell bottom jeans and sandals (bare feet were best). A hippie female NEVER wore a bra...it was too binding, too "restrictive of their freedom to be the natural person".
3) Anti-conformity. Anti-conformity. Anti-conformity.
4) You must be a vegetarian. Hippies were "hip" (clued in) to the earth, nature, God, spiritual mentality. They would not ever eat another living thing.

The necesities of a hippie:
--Headband with flower
--LOVE beads~~*groovy*
--Hip hugger, bell bottom jeans and wide leather belt.
--for women, a halter top
--Hair is long and "unkempt looking"
--for women, a mini or micro skirt..a chain belt was groovy. Boots or go-go boots.
--Men - Jeans, the grungier the better. Leather vests were big too.
--Fringe - for all. Vest, jackets, pants, shirts. Anything could be fringed.
--Bare feet!
--Peace symbol
-AND DRUGS!! Weed/"Grass", LSD

Ummmm, let's see how much I can remember that generation!! Okay, this is what I can recall of that period.
Bell bottoms
Halter tops...or, no tops in some cases!
Most girls wore long hair
Love of cultural music
The need to be apart of a group...friends and such
Most used drugs
Seemed partial to VW's and big flowers on them!
