US is a very large market and is also highly competitive, hence many products are sold at competitive prices compared to the ones in the product's home countries.

Secondly Japanese retail prices are often higher for similar goods due to a more complex pricing system native in Japan and the fact that foreign competition has been low (due to some level of government protection) but is increasing in recent years.

In Japan there are a number of middle men or distributors. And every one takes there profit. This is why Japan has resisted the Walmarts and Costcos and Toys-R-Us discounts stores. Then the department stores can't sell it lower than the local, so they can bump up their prices too. No one wins there except at the Walmarts or Costcos.
