These steps are with regard to syaptic transmission. Generally, an action potential (the "nerve impulse" arrives in an axon terminal (15) and depolarizes it. This causes the opening of voltage-gated calcium channels. The calcium diffuses into the terminal and encourages the binding of synaptic vesicles to the terminal cell membrane(13). This exocytosis causes the release of the vesicle contents (the neurotransmitter) into the synaptic cleft (14). The neurotransmitter diffuess across the synaptic cleft and binds to receptors on the post synaptic cell (16).
