It depends on what you are trying to kill. Roundup kills ANYTHING it touches. 24d is for broadleaf plants only, so it won't kill wheat or grasses.
I am a farmer and when we learned about Roundup we danced in the streets. If you are trying to kill weeds in your lawn 24d is the stuff. If you want to kill everything, then Roundup is for you. In some really tough weeds, mix them. Remember, Roundup will kill everything so you have to be careful and not let it drift. Wash everything thoroughly with soap and plenty of hot water after you apply it and don't walk through what you sprayed and then walk across the lawn, you will have dead lawn where you stepped. It happened to me!

Alan has my thumbs up except there are plants Roundup will not kill......unfortunately. However probably 95% of the plants will be killed or severely stunted by Roundup with is the chemical glyphosate......totally different from 2-4d which is way too long to type here.
Roundup is deactivated when it contacts most soils. The more clay or organic matter them better the soil binds the chemical until it can be broken down. This is one reason we applauded when it came on board because the chemicals gardeners were trying to use before were moving through the soil and killing nontargeted plants.....like your neighbor's plants.
2-4D is best known for killing dandelions and the like. It can be sprayed over a lawn since it does not kill grasses........but overspray would kill other monocots such as iris and tulips.
So it depends on what you are killing and how you will apply it. Dandelions in sidewalk cracks, 2-4D is fine and cheaper than Roundup. Bindweed or other major rooted perennial week, I'd spray with Roundup, spraying only the targeted plant.

roundup, (glyphosate) works best on early growth weeds before they get well established. roundup works better on grasses than on broadleafs. if you are looking for a complete burndown, you may want to mix roundup or generic glyphosate, use the 41 % concentrate with amine 2-4d weed killer. if you have thistle or any waxy leave weeds, add a few drops of dish soap as a surfactant to get the spray to bite in better. you will need to spray on a calm day as 2-4d will drift and can kill trees and any garden flowers or vegetables. you will notice a burndown within 24 hrs of the 2-4d application, and should have a complete burndown in 2 weeks. you can check with your county extension office (farm bureau) for further information.

This is like comparing apples to oranges. They are two different products that act in different ways. 2-4d is a broad leaf killer that can be safely sprayed on grasses, while Roundup will kill everything. If you are wanting to kill broad leaf plants in your yard, use 2-4d as Roundup will give you brown patches, if you want to kill plants in a sidewalk or a driveway use roundup as it will leave it looking clean, having killed all plant life.
