Everyone I've asked says that its normal for the older model diesels to put out black smoke...
Is it true that nothing will stop it?
Other than not driving it, of course. lol

diesels are real simple.. black smoke is too much gas and not enough air. make sure you air filter and air filter chamber is clear and check the fuel injection pump.

New diesels barely smoke, unless you "romp" on them in top gear. But older diesels are notorious for smoking. My 06' VW Golf TDI rarely smoke, most likely because the turbo is Variable(which means the fins adjust to how much fuel is being injected., which mean faster spool up times and a more complete burn of the fuel.

Have you tried a oil specific for high mileage vehilces, they a formulated to help "plump" the seals back up. Well, that is not the tecnical way to say it but that is what they pretty much do.

Nothing other than making sure the oil is changed properly...and filter...Generally every 3000 miles on older, high mileage vehicles...
