Veins by definition carry blood back towards the heart. Since the umbilical vein is in the fetus, it carries blood from the mother (via the placenta) to the infant.

The umbilical cord is the means by which the fetus gets nurishment from the mother.also blood is moved thu it as the fetus grows to term. not bad for a 9 month project built by unskilled labor. it is the means by which we of this generation connect to the next and keep the blood line going forth. for both, mom and father. it is your connection with the future. Love those involved, for it is a gift! the gift of love and life. The greatest gift a father can give his children is to love thier mother.
