If there is a lesson to be learned from it - like we don't repeat the mistakes, then lots of value. If we ignore the lessons, then shame on us!

History has an uncanny way of repeating itself... which does not necessarily mean that exact events that took place in the past will again take place.. but when you look at how situations were handled, you can get an idea of what to do and what not to do. Therefore, history can be a useful tool in decision making for future events. But ultimately you should ask yourself "What is VALUE?"

The true value of history lies in what it tells us about the world in which we live. All aspects of our existence are products of much longer periods of development, and their continuity and change remain only dimly evident to us until we begin to learn something about the past. The best historians present us with descriptions and analyses of the past that make unfamiliar times and places somehow understandable. Learning history gives us understanding of who we are, of what potential we have, of what dangers threaten individuals, families, communities, and nations. they show us where things went wrong, where they went right and where they just were. We find a link to the past, to our own ancestors, to why our families hold the values they do, why the customs we continue to celebrate are important and where they came from.
History is not something that will ever stop. Everytime we pass a day, our yesterday becomes history.

Historical perspective teaches the what and when. We must not forget the who and why. We are all a package and affect one another individually and as a whole. History shows us those events and the long term affect. Look around you, G.W. is as blind about Iraq as Johnson was about Viet Nam. Both claim to be "Americans" but forget the Representative Democracy we are a part of, ignoring the past, the present and the people.

There's a quote of sorts that goes something like this, "those who are ignorant of history, are bound to repeat the tragedies of the past."

It's just a saying however, as our leaders never seem to learn from their mistakes. Case in point: Vietnam vs Iraq

To understand why things are the way they are today. It's all very clear why the events in the world are happening if you know your history.
