Both are good mid-high cards. I'd prefer the 7900 but it depends how good a deal you get whether I'd buy the 7900 or 1650. Neither are directX10

I have heard good things about the 7900, however I have never owned either card.

I upgraded from an ATI Radeon X850XT to a Nvidia 8800GTX and it's like night and day. The 8800GTX is a beast of a card, I can run Half Life 2 at 1600x1200 resolution with all graphics settings maxed out at well over 60 FPS.

If you want a card that has next gen DirectX10 capability, look at nothing below Nvidia 8800 series cards.

I would pick any GeForce 7900 over the X1650. The X1650 is actually just slightly faster than the GeForce 7600. Both are not really worth it if you're buying them retail now since prices rarely drop on last generation cards these days and new ones just come out and replace them at the same or slightly higher price.

The best card you can get in that price range now which would probably be in the same price range would be the GeForce 8600GT ($150-$200 range) which just came out and now has DirectX 10 support. If you don't have Vista though, then don't worry about Direct X 10, but regardless it's still the better deal.

i love ATi by no potential had a card die on me, cant say an same for Nvidia :P yet utilising an ATi card on smaller operating platforms can be a soreness... So domicile windows/Mac then its going to be an ATi Card. yet Linux/BSD/Skyos/and so on. Its going to be an Nvidia... yet who else compared to sturdy previous AMD/ATi might want to launch their new chip (HD 3850) for the getting old AGP slots :P lengthy stay my Quad Xeon gaming rig :P
