The Federal tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon. It is levied at the same rate throughout the US. Each state is free to levy their own taxes on gasoline and all do. The state taxes vary widely, from a low of 8 cents in Alaska (GA is only 7.5 but they charge 4% sales tax on gasoline) to over 32 cents in Wisconsin.

Federal tax doesn't vary. But there are also state taxes on gas, and they vary a lot from state to state.

I think it is about 20 cents a gallon, and the state tax varies between states. I am probably wrong about the 20 cents since I have not looked it up for years.

Now those are ROAD taxes and are used to make and repair roads.

State and local sales taxes may be added on top of those, in a sort of double taxation.
