was counterfeit, I do however have a genuine copy of windows xp on a cd , can I install this to overide & get rid of the fake copy (which works perfectly well) , without losing any files etc. or cause any problems ! do I have to remove the fake copy first !

there is a place to put in the proper key code.. all you need to do is try puting in the key code and if it is lagit it will validat it you need to follow the directions on the web site to do this...............if they are the same version of xp...............many differant builds so it needs to be the real deal

Why are you running a counterfeit copy of Windows XP, if you have the genuine Windows XP with a valid key??. I am sure you are well aware of Windows Genuine Advantage/ (Tool that Microsoft uses to validate and copy all your hardware in your system).
Myself I would call Microsoft if you have their telepone #, dependng on what country you are in and tell them your problem and give them the real registration key.
Burn all your files that you need to a CD first.
A clean install is always better.

Call the microsoft verification phone # and give them the number... No need to reinstall. As long as the genuine copy hasn't been used on another computer.

just make a back-up of your files first the reformat your computer with your genuine copy of windows xp...
