One combines solid phenol (C6H5OH), phthalic anhydride, and a little anhydrous zinc chloride and heats (melts) them together.

It is made in factories, though I have produced a little of it in a test tube.

Condensation of phenol and phthalic anhydride. Yes made in a factory. Use can make it in a test-tube. Heat phenol and phthalic anhydride crystals together in a test-tube with a drop or 2 of conc. sulphuric acid. The product will go bright pink if added to sodium hydroxide (or any alkali) solution.
