Well, let's see... the same studio and guy who wrote Eureka Seven did FLCL or Fooly Cooly. Bizarre.. only 6 episodes long.

SOmeone above me said to try Paranoia Agent. They're right. If you like strange, then it definately covers that.

They also suggested Raxxephon... I found it a bit too heavy handed, especially for a Mech series. Good, but I just couldn't force myself to keep up with it.

A good Classic series would be Escaflowne.

If you like Magic and Mayhem, and the occassional Adult humor, I found "Louie the Rune Soldier" a hoot. It sort of makes fun of the whole Dungeons and Dragons, Medieval Magic setting while still, somehow, taking it seriously.

"Those who hunt Elves" is hilarious.
"Maburaho", "Abenobashi" and "Excel Saga" are absolutely insane. No really. They are. Crazy, make your head spin insane. But man are they fun!

And if you want dark, sinister, deep, psychological ... try Gantz, Karas or Gasaraki.

If you want gratuitous violence and bloodshed, try "Beserk" ...awesome series with a -REALLY - weird ending. "Bastard" is only 2 or 3 OAV's, but well worth the watch.

"Hellsing" or "Trinity Blood "for your vampire fetish, if you happen to like them, and Blood: The last Vampire is a movie, but well worth sitting down for. "Blood +" is based on the Blood: Last Vampire movie, and carries on where you were left off for a whole series.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned "Vampire Hunter D" yet. There were two movies, the second of which "Bloodlust" I thought to be better. The movies were based on a series of books, and if you like to read... they'll keep you entertained for a while. "Trinity Blood" and "Blood the last vampire" also have novelizations available.

I hope that gives you somewhere to start from, at least. That's a good selection of all sorts of genres that aren't normally asked about. I tried to give you titles that were both, good and maybe not so generically popular with the babykiddies who are now giant Anime fans.

I wasn't a fan of Ghost in the Shell either. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

I think FULL METAL ALCHEMIST has a few elements related to ELFEN LIED as regards human experiments and so is the anime MONSTER.

They say ELFEN LIED is like a mix of three animes, namely:

Chobits = for cuteness
3x3 eyes = for the monsters, grotesque beings
Gunslinger Girl = for the violence and psychological control over young children.

You may want to check on them. Or for weirdness sake, how about watching SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN or PARANOIA AGENT (or also Ergo Proxy). Shares that same eerie environment of Elfen Lied.

As for Eureka Seven, you might want to check out MACROSS ZERO or BLUE SUBMARINE 6 and some post EVANGELION mecha anime like RAHXEPHON, BRAIN POWERD and GARASAKI. They share related plots and elements that you may like.
