What's the best way to clean the carpets and cloth seats in my car?

They are very dirty. Is there a steam clean machine I could rent somewhere with a small spraying and sucking part, like a home carpet cleaner, but smaller for a car?

Rent the steam cleaner, but forget the expensive cleaners that they sell. Go to local Dollar Store and buy MEAN GREEN gal jugs. Its works better than anything else on market. It is not destructive and works very good.
