The Lindbergh baby kidnapping was one of the most heavily covered media events in the US in the 20th Century. Bruno Richard Hauptmann was almost certainly involved and probably the only person involved in the kidnapping.

Hauptmann was found to be in possession of a good deal of the ransom money at the time of his arrest. An unusually handcrafted ladder was found at the scene of the kidnapping. The boards from the ladder fit with missing boards in Hauptmann's house. At the ransom drop, his voice was identified. These were the main pieces of evidence. He was executed, but maintained his innocence. No better suspect has ever emerged.

It was one of the earliest examples of the risks and power of celebrity.

The baby was only kidnapped because his father was famous. The public only cared because his father was famous. From what I remember the guy was caught mostly because of the level of attention the case received, again because the father was famous.

Fame is a powerful, sometimes dangerous thing.
