Because we were on the wrong side in WWII. If we had sided with Germany, the Soviet Union and communism would have been destroyed. Even if we had joined with the German army at the end of WWII, after the Nazis had been beaten, and advanced to Moscow there would have been no cold war an no nuclear threat.

Distrust between the Soviet Union and the United States after WWII led to tension which led to competitiveness which led to hype in the media, the arms race, and the space race.
