Because it's not always about how much money you spend, they've got some very good defensive players and possibly the best defensive minded head coach in the game, so they spend more on offense because Dungy can make a defense work with less big name players. As far as the 160 yds/game, I could be wrong but seeing how they did a complete 180 as soon as the playoffs started, I think it was their plan to let people run on them knowing that they would still win plenty of games anyway, then get everyone in the playoffs game-planning for their "weak run D" and not know what to do when their plan went to crap because the Colts inserted their real defensive scheme.

Tony Dungy uses the Tampa 2 defense which requires a lot of teamwork on defense but not the most talented layers. They spend the most defensive money on their defensive line because that is the most important part of the Tampa 2 defense. The Tampa 2 is designed to not give up the big play but its weakness is that it can give up small chunks of yardage. With the Colts offense if they can come out and score some points real quickly it puts the opposing offense in a position where they can't settle for small chunks of yardage. That is why the Colts win so many games.

I personally don't think this is the most effective way to win, but the Colts have done a good job with it.

I think it's a combination of getting Peyton Manning the most weapons and to light up the scoreboard to keep fans in their seats. I think the management has confidence in Dungy coaching up young guys to become stars on the defense. To me the Ravens and the Colts, have a weird style in relation to coach and roster. The Ravens have a really offensive minded head coach (Brian Billick), but carry the best defense. The Colts are just the opposite. Dungy is a great defensive coach, but they got a better offense. To me it's a mystery that a team would run that way. I think a team should focus on their head coach's strength not his weakness. Well at least they got Peyton and that offense to win them about 9 games.

The colt's drafting style is to get the best player off the board and draft speedy defenders. While the most sound defensive players are at the top of the draft, the quicker and sometimes more athletic players are later. So far it has worked for the colts, plus they added a little more size to the front 4 so they wouldn't be run all over this year like the last.

As proof from last season and prior seasons, they win mostly with offense. They know how to manage the clock with ball control. They'll win alot of games this year by doing that... they have the schemes/talent and good coaching staff.
Tony Dungy has a defensive mind and management believes that he can/will get players to play up to the level they need to and, they believe that he can teach/mold new players/rookies... turning them into good defensive players.
They did lose some good guys on defense, but they can still pick up a couple of good players off from waivers once teams start cutting and downsizing (53 man roster). They'll be fine, but a repeat will be very tough, especially in the AFC and especially this coming season!

They go to the draft for defense: Freeney, Bob Sanders, Marlin Jackson, Antoine Bethea, Mathis have been taken on the last 5 draft classes. All of them are solid players.

Cato June was not that good and Nick Harper will be 33 when next season starts, so he will eventually slow down. I only think they should have taken a LB instead of Anthony Gonzalez.

While it is often stated defense wins championships, one has to look at what players a team currently has on the roster before deciding what players to draft.

The Colts were able, by virtue of having the first pick, draft Peyton Manning. He surely has proven himself to be a wonderful QB. If you have a potential hall-of-fame QB, doesn't it make sense to try to draft offensive players to augment the talents of that potential hall-of-famer?

The team that scores the most points, in whatever fashion, wins the game. Granted, Defensive players can score points. But at certain times a team drafts a player who is in the superstar category. For instance, the Baltimore Ravens drafted Ray Lewis, surrounded him with a lot of defensive talent, and won a Superbowl with an average offense. The Chicago Bears currently have a ferocious defense built around superstar Brian Urlacher.

When you have a chance to draft a true playmaker, whether on offense or defense, it makes sense to build up whatever side, offense or defense, the true playmaker plays on. The Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco Forty-Niners won a lot of superbowls built around playmaker QB's, running backs and wide receivers. So offense can win superbowls.

There are only perhaps 10 superstar players in the NFL: it makes sense, if you have one of those superstars, to build up whatever side of the ball he plays on because it is easier to build one side of the ball if you have one of the NFL superstars playing on that side of the ball.

I hear you, but the Colts are smart. They always go for the best player available, regardless of position need. If a team drafts strictly on current need, they tend to reach. Marvin Harrison won't play forever, and if he gets hurt, then that pick looks great.

Because you can have the best defense in the NFL, but if your offense isn't scoring, that hurts you. Like the saying goes, "The best defense is a good offense."

The O gottem' the ring and that is what they are counting on again. I believe their luck will run out if they don't tighten up that D line, but when you have Manning, Addai, Harrison yadda yadda yadda, they will continue to play russian roulette until "BANG!" It'll be Colts no more.
