That depends on where you live, and if you want a full bred wolf. The people we bought our house from had wolves ( I think they were a mix of something though) And thats in Washington State. Let us know where you live so we can give you more information. If you want a wolf and it is illegal then try to find a close mix to a wolf. Alaskan Malamutes are my personal fave. Huskys are nice to. But if you want closer to wolf then do some research or call an animal center.

I believe that ownoing wolfs and wolf hybreds depends on where you live. You also should really investigate on what you are looking for. They aer not domestic dogs even if bred to one there will always be a wild bit in your dog. You never know if or when it will come out and how it will.
Just for an example I know someone who had a wolf/husky mix. The mother wae wold/husky and teh father was pure wold.
for the first 3 years the dog was the sweetest, most trust worthy dog you could meet. Shortly after it turned 3 she started to change. First she started to get more and more aggressive kind of like a wolf who is looking to try to take on teh Alpha female roll.
the people had her put to sleep because she got to the point noone could get near her she acted like a wolf all teh way.

There are wolfdogs which are part wolf, that you sometimes see people keeping. You can get different percentages of how much wolf is contains and is often mixed with dogs like Huskies and German Shepherds.
Note that they are not like looking after domestic dogs. They need a large enclosure, are difficult to train, stubborn, very smart so they work out how to do things you don't want them to, they see you as an equal and not a master, and are lots of work.
I'm sure though, that if you are able to handle a wolfdog, it is a great companion and friend.

in most states with the proper permit or license to house a "wild" animal : yes a wolf can be legal...is it legal where you are? I don't know but it is legal in IL and in WI as long as you have a permit...you can call your local ASPCA or humane society for specifics on your area...they may tell you where to get a permit or the many other conditions under which you can get a wolf (proper housing...training..that sort of thing...)
hope this helps...btw: why do you want to know? Do you want a pet wolf OR do you know someone who has one and was wondering if what they were doing was legal? just curious...

Everyone who has answered this so far, is WRONG!!! It is not illegal to have a wolf! Just so long as it doesn't attack anyone that is. If it does you will be in so much trouble!! If its a Husky or something like that it is a good dog to have. Just keep it friendly, and if it gets mean, get rid of it!!

Are you serious, you think a wolf is just like having a big dog?
Youre stupid if you think this. I work at a place that has wolves, born in captivity and they are nothing like dogs in the way they act with humans. They are wild even born in captivity. The only real tame animal would be a dog. Yes they eat similar things in captivity but your an idiot if anyone has one as a pet

Depends on where you live. Find out from the town. Of the people I've known to have them, they were usually a mix of something. Call a vet or the town. They should know.
