Vacuum, backwash, rinse, sweep.

Backwashing will flush debris up from the bottom of the sand stack and suspend it in the filter and plumbing at the spider valve. Rinsing just flushes this debris out to waste. If you were to rinse first then you would deposit the debris back in the pool after backwashing and turning it to return to the pool.
