Retired...the purpose of Answers, according to Yahoo, is for the sharing of knowledge. Since Wiki IS already accessible and answers from those who frequent this site are NOT previously posted, it is that knowledge that is being solicited.

They do it because they think it will give them a better chance of getting a best answer. It is frustrating though. I know how to use a search engine and wikipedia, I don't need a person to go and look it up for me.

Because people, generally speaking, are looking for an easy button. Kids doing homework asking for answers and many "top contributors" just copying a wiki answer. I hope the teachers can spot the wiki answers and fail the kids,
I ALWAYS rate these answer clowns with the thumbs down.
Great question, and 1 I have wondered about also.

I think it's people who are too uneducated to know, too lazy to research, too unintelligent to hold a thoughtful opinion and too illiterate to be able to paraphrase. Although endlessly annoying, there's a humorous side if you think about it. Wiki isn't the best source of information around, so quoting from it is kind of like plagiarizing from Cliff's Notes. It's sad when a person can't even plagiarize well.

What I find strange is almost any internet search engine will help them find answers to most of the questions being asked.

And why do they ever get 'top answer'? It's pretty damn weak... put it in your source field, but to cut-and-paste is very lame.
Mind you, in modern life people can go an awfully long way cutting-and-pasting other people's work.

lol!!!
Because it seems like 75% of the questions that are being asked are a matter of people being too lazy to find (i.e.: check the web, look into an atlas, read an encyclopedia, etc) the answers themselves.
Do you have any idea how many people ask for the name of such and such country or body of water in this location?

Why don't people look on Wikipedia prior to asking a question? Some are just so obvious! That is a better question.

My pet peeve is when people copy & paste an answer that is insanely long & it take 5 minutes to scroll past the stupid thing.
