Why are ferrets illegal in california?

My friend told me they are, but had no idea why. So why are they?

acutally, the only true answer is that California (unlike other smarter states) decided to make a list of ALLOWABLE pets instead of making a list of not-allowed pets (like Hawaii)

So trying to get that list upated to ALLOW ferrets to be added, has been a 20 year battle by many pet owners.

The above posters are actually indicative of their ignorance on owning ferrets as pets (not to be blamed, that's why California never put it on the list in the first place). but having owned a ferret in another state, they are sweet and lovable animals with behaviors of both cat and dog, and like any other animal, if given the proper care, are very sociable too.

And in many states, in order to get a pet ferret, you must have them spayed/neutered, so that prevents them from breeding. And many stores sell them already de-scented.

They do not pose a biological threat to any native species or plants.

Endangered praire dogs. Ferrets are a natural predator, and if a breeding pair of ferrets got into the wild near a praire dog town (yes, they're called towns), they can wipe out the whole thing in a matter of months to years.

If more than one managed to get loose, it could breed and wipe out some of the indigenous creatures. Ferrets are legal most everywhere else in the US.
