A wolf is more ferocious then a hyena. Hyena hunts in packs, like wolfs do.
But, hyena eats left over from the lions. They don't normally kill for food.
Wolfs are much of a killer type of animal.

Gray Wolf (Alpha Male) vs Spotted Hyena (Female Clan Leader)

I think this would certainly be one of the most evenly matched fights in the animal kingdom. I did a little research and found (surprinsgly) that the these two animals are about the same size (links below). I always thought the Hyena was much larger...

I agree that the Hyena is a pretty tough beast though they are often underrated as a predator. Years ago I saw one of the best documentaries ever produced (If Animals can Hate or similar title). It was a Hyena vs Lion story. At one point a pack of Hyenas intimidated and chased a bunch of Lionesses up into a tree as they spent a season fighting over territory - it got very personal... (fyi... Wolves do this all the time with bears).

Hyenas have an estimated bite strength of 1,000 pounds per square inch (psi) compared to the Wolf's 500 psi. Bite strength, however, doesn't equate to a win here (Tigers can take down alligators with ease on land, cougars can take down a wolf, wolverines can chase away many larger predators).

There is something, however, about a Wolf that I think gives it an edge... Attitude. It fears nothing and is the king of it's domain - even when hunting alone. The Hyena, in contrast, is a little like a bear. It can and is always chased off when alone - even in a pack, they can be chased off by larger numbers of smaller animals or aggressive displays. They are hated in the wild - even the smaller African Wild Dogs are known to attack Hyenas and injure them (perhaps because of their scavenger ways).

In a fight for territory, the Gray Wolf emerges victorious - time and again. In a one-on-one fight, I think the Wolf's more aggresive nature puts it on top 6/10 to 8/10 of the times.

if you have ever seen both a hyena and a wolf up close you would never ask this question
A wolf is like a big german sheppard
a hyena will attack a lion and bite him in the rear end
their skin is like leather .look at their nose it is like a bear ,they can bite of your arm in one easy bite
their jaws are amongs the strongest in the animal kingdom
a hyena would demolish a wolf in 5 seconds ,

a cougar which is a small lion ,would have a very hard time with a hyena

also hyenas are very brave they will pull meat from a lions mouth if they get half the chance, cats tend to run if scared

It could go eather way. The hyena is bigger and faster. The wolf is stronger and have more powerful teeth. But if I have to choose one, my money is on the wolf. Of 200 % of all the fights between wolf and hyena, I would give 103 % to the wolf and 97 % to the hyena. So I think the wolf is a little bit more powerful than the hyena.

Most strong wolf species are extinct today because of angry farmers.

However wolves seem to adapt on more territories than hyenas, hence to have better consitution than hyenas.

Perhaps the hyena can strike first and harder, but i'm not sure it can endure as much punishment as a wolf.

The Hyena has more crushing power in the jaws. The wolf likes to howl. I think the Hyena would really make the wolf howl.

I think a wolf actually. Because Hyenas usually eat already dead animals rather than kill them.
